Monitor cash spending

There are probably days when you wonder where all your money has gone. It’s time to find out.

  1. Identify all cash spending: Make a list of everything you purchased last week, from the little items like a pack of gum or an ATM fee to bigger costs, such as dining out. Write down how much you spent and where you spent it.

  2. Involve all family members:  Make sure all of your household spending is accounted for by including your spouse and any dependents.

  3. Keep a money diary: For the next week, write down every penny you spend.

  4. Analyze: With these two weeks of spending written down, examine your habits. Ask yourself where you can cut back.
