Losing Work Hours and Benefits

If your work hours have been reduced, you might be put on part-time status and no longer have benefits. That’s a double blow — you lose income at the same time you have to pay more for things like health care services.

  • If you’re worried about being able to pay the mortgage, let your mortgage lender know your hours have been cut back. Try to work out an alternate payment plan that allows you to continue paying your mortgage.

  • Seek assistance from private- and public-sector plans to help you keep your home.

  • Part-time work can make up the difference in income with fewer hours and help pay the mortgage. Employment search engines and job databases are good resources. Job fairs sponsored by your state labor department are another way to go, too.

  • If married, check to see if you can be added to your spouse's health insurance plan.
