Dealing with a Burglary

Dealing with a Burglary

Residential burglaries and other property crimes often increase during economic downturns. And there’s a definite link between a rise in foreclosure rates and an increase in neighborhood crime. That’s partly because abandoned, unkempt homes attract criminal activity.

If You Have Been Burglarized:

Alert your mortgage lender immediately if this will affect your ability to pay your mortgage.

File a police report about the crime right away. That documents the extent of your loss for a lender.

Tips To Keep Your Home Safe:

Be knowledgeable about your insurance coverage and deductible. Know what’s covered and what’s not, and talk with your insurance agent if you have questions or wonder if your policy is sufficient for where you live.

Be proactive. Make a list of everything in the house, including furniture, jewelry, sporting goods, and other items. Even better is making a video recording of the contents of every room. Be sure the date stamp is turned on, and you can add comments on your possessions as the tape runs. If you are burglarized, you’ll be able to provide the police with a list of what’s missing and a description of each item.

Enlist the help of your neighbors. Getting people together in a neighborhood-watch program can make your street, and your home, less appealing to would-be criminals.

Step up security in your home. For example, consider adding stronger window glass, security doors, alarm systems, security lighting, and other safety measures. Two resources from the National Sheriff’s Association provide numerous tips to keep your home safe.
