child support issues

  • Anticipate situations that may arise as a result of remarriage. For example, if a custodial parent remarries someone with a higher income and/or assets, their ex-spouse could go to court to request that child support payments be reduced or eliminated.
  • A decision that could backfire is when one spouse wants to add the other to their house title. This then subjects the house to claims by their new spouse’s creditors and could disqualify children from college financial aid or other benefits.
  • Honor your agreement to pay child support to an ex-spouse. Child support is a legally mandated payment from a non-custodial parent to a custodial parent. Child support payments are essential to the welfare of children and send a strong message that parents care about their well-being.
  • Many states withhold income tax refunds, revoke driver’s licenses, or impose jail sentences to collect support payments.
  • Paying support to an ex-spouse often requires a change in lifestyle as income is stretched to cover two households. Both parents often experience financial difficulty after divorce and managing money requires adjustments and sacrifices.
  • Don’t involve children in arguments about financial matters. They should not have to worry about whether bills will be paid or act as an intermediary to collect support payments. Instead, reassure children that they will be taken care of and discuss necessary financial changes such as reduced spending on meals eaten out or fewer cable television channels.
