Disabled Children—Financial Planning AND TRUSTS

Print

  • Consider hiring a financial planner and/or attorney for advice regarding the financial security of a disabled child.
  • A special needs trust is often recommended so that a disabled child can be given gifts, inheritances, and life insurance policy proceeds without jeopardizing their access to public benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.
  • A special needs trust continues to provide funds to improve the quality of life of the disabled child if he or she survives the parents.
  • Other helpful resources are local Arc chapters (www.thearc.org) and state and county government agencies that serve developmentally disabled populations.
